Responding Well to Domestic Abuse in Parish Ministry

Recognise opportunities for hope, avoid common pastoral pitfalls, respond with confidence to difficult conversations

Responding Well to Domestic Abuse in Parish Ministry

When someone trusts you enough to tell you what's happening at home, will your response open a door to safety—or unintentionally close it?

“Ministry Toolbox” is a series of hour-long, bite-sized, stand-alone sessions delivered for clergy via Zoom on weekday lunchtimes.

Each session takes a practical approach to a specific area of leading in ministry and mission. These are especially suited to those new to or looking towards incumbency, but any clergy are welcome to attend any session.

Clergy are often among the first people a victim-survivor turns to, yet many of the responses that feel instinctively pastoral can unintentionally become barriers to someone finding safety and support.

In this practical session, Carolina Kuzaks-Cardenas from Restored will explore the unique role of clergy when domestic abuse is disclosed. Through real parish scenarios, we will consider how key faith topics like forgiveness, marriage, prayer and reconciliation can be experienced by those living with abuse, and how seemingly well-intentioned conversations can either empower or silence someone seeking help.

This session will equip clergy to recognise opportunities for hope, avoid common pastoral pitfalls, respond with confidence to difficult conversations, and become enablers of safety, healing and recovery. Participants will leave with practical insights they can use the very next time someone says, "Can I have a quick word?"
