Annual Safeguarding Service at Chester Cathedral, 10 June
A solemn reminder of our responsibility and a joyful affirmation of the compassionate community we strive to build

The Bishop of Chester, the Rt Revd Dr Mark Tanner, and the Dean of Chester warmly invite clergy, lay ministers, children and youth workers, parish safeguarding officers, lead recruiters, PCC members, and safeguarding leads in schools to attend the Annual Safeguarding Service at Chester Cathedral on Tuesday, 10 June 2025 at 7:00pm.
This special service provides an opportunity to give thanks for all those who work tirelessly to make our churches, schools, and community projects safer places. It is also a time to renew our shared commitment to the vital ministry of protecting and caring for those who are vulnerable or have experienced abuse.
During the service, special recognition will be given to several individuals for their exceptional contributions to safeguarding across the diocese.
The service will also mark the official launch of the Diocese of Chester’s new safeguarding initiative: “Speak Out, Stay Safe”, a campaign encouraging openness, awareness, and support for those affected by abuse and our shared responsibility to keep everyone safe.
Bishop Mark Tanner will deliver the sermon, reflecting on the importance of safeguarding at the core of Christian service and community.
Following the service, guests are invited to gather in the South Transept under the Peace Doves installation for light refreshments.
This gathering is both a solemn reminder of our responsibility and a joyful affirmation of the compassionate community we strive to build.
The Bishop of Birkenhead, Julie Conalty the lead Bishop for Safeguarding said: "This now annual event is an opportunity to come together from across Chester Diocese to give thanks for all the work that goes on in parishes, projects and church schools in order to safeguard those who are vulnerable and to respond well to anyone who reports or has experienced abuse. While we lament and repent of the failings of the Church, we can also celebrate the progress we are making and those whose contributions have been particularly notable. This year we have the added joy of launching our Speak Out Stay Safe campaign."
