Divinity Knitivity Activity in Church Lawton

Christmas has come early to All Saints Church in Lawton where the team have brought the local community together in a creative way with the unveiling of its 'Knitivity', a 9 month project which culminates this October half-term.
The exhibition is a depiction of the Nativity, made with, life-sized nativity people and animals, made entirely from hand-stitched squares of wool.
Rector Reverend Heather Kemball, leads the project alongside parishioner Bev Bolton, though they are keen to emphasise that this is a team project, only possible thanks to the help and support from others.
The knitted squares, have been contributed by members of the congregation, residents in local care homes, and even supporters from abroad. Each patch has been crafted and stitched together to form a collection of figures that include Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, and animals gathered around the manger.
The project has clearly struck a chord across Church Lawton and beyond. Bev explains how people often stopped her in the street to ask what colour yarn the team needs next, reflecting the collective enthusiasm behind the project.
While the knitting has been a shared labor of love, much of the structure and scenery has been built by Deputy Church Warden, Paul who describes himself as the “woodwork, metalwork, and scenery department.”
“I don’t like knitting,” he says. “So I leave that to the ladies and disappear into my workshop to make all the models and scenery — and it all comes together in the end.”
The exhibition has brought the congregation together to build a sense of a community united by faith and creativity. Visitors are encouraged to come and see the display in person, reflect on the story of the Nativity, and celebrate the spirit of togetherness.
