Know Your Place! Parish Census Data Tool to support local mission

A new information tool, designed to help parishes gain a clearer understanding of the communities they serve, has been launched by the Strategy team at Chester Diocese.
The Parish Census Data Tool provides easy access to maps and searchable data on a street‑by‑street basis, enabling churches to explore information about the people in their parish, at deanery and diocesan level.
Jon Pocock, Strategic Programme Director, explains how the tool can support thoughtful and informed mission planning:
“Facts such as ethnic background, age profiles, economic activity, and areas of deprivation are all incredibly useful when planning mission and outreach. Having access to accurate information, rather than relying on assumptions, can really strengthen decision‑making - especially around activities like planting New Christian Communities. Statistical data like this can also be vital when applying for funding for local projects.”
Early feedback from parish clergy who have been testing out the platform has been encouraging. Revd Keith Addenbrooke in Birkenhead recently tested the tool and said he found it both ‘easy to use’ and ‘highly insightful’ for understanding the needs of his neighbourhood.
At a diocesan level, the Parish Census Data Tool also offers wider strategic benefits. It can help identify parishes with similar community profiles, highlight areas with shared challenges or opportunities, and assist in connecting churches serving comparable ethnic or demographic populations.
Jon Pocock added:
“We are very happy to show people how to use the tool and to provide practical advice and support to help them interpret the information it provides. Our aim is to equip parishes with the insight they need to make confident, mission‑shaped decisions based on real data.”
“Understanding our communities is central to discerning our calling.
This tool gives parishes the chance to look with fresh eyes at the places where God has called us to serve and to respond with imagination, compassion and confidence.”
