Racial Justice Unit

The Racial Justice Unit focuses on addressing systemic racial inequalities and promoting equity within society. In order to fulfil these purposes, the Racial Justice Unit advocates for policy reforms to eradicate racial disparities in areas such as education, employment and ministry.

Our aims are to:

  • Dismantle discriminatory policies

  • Uplift marginalised communities within the church and wider community

  • Foster inclusive environments with Godly principles at the basis of our thinking

The Unit is vital in breaking down the long-standing social and economic impacts on marginalised groups. The team also works hard to ensure that racial justice goals are not just utopian ideals but provides resources to make these tangible realities.

Racial justice officer

Nadene Wright, Racial Justice Officer for the Diocese of Chester, advocates for marginalised voices within churches, communities and schools across the Diocese. She is responsible for promoting racial equality, addressing discrimination, and fostering inclusivity within the church and its communities. The role involves advocacy, education, and policy development to ensure that racial justice is embedded in the culture of diocesan life.

Main responsibilities:

  • Championing racial justice within the diocese

  • Supporting clergy, congregations, and communities in addressing racial inequities

  • Act as a liaison between the diocese and external racial justice organisations

  • Organise anti-racism workshops, discussions and training for clergy and church members

  • Raise awareness of racial bias and discrimination in church practices

Nadene Wright is trained in anti-Racial bias, unconscious bias, and has been on the Difference course, to aid in promoting a greater understanding of diversity and equality within schools and churches. She invites parishes and deaneries to have training and education in their own unconscious biases and centres Christ, ensuring everyone understands the true purposes of their training.

Racial Justice in Schools

Nadene comes from an education background and is passionate about disbanding systemic barriers which prevent Global Majority Heritage groups from accessing education in the same way as their White British peers. Collaborating with the Chester Diocesan Board of Education, she works within schools to aid in creating diversity teams, led by students and advocates within the school. Children are excellent pioneers for change and can help to make the future more accessible for people who are hindered by longstanding barriers in education and employment.
