Bishops bring sunshine and smiles to Frodsham Deanery

Bishops bring sunshine and smiles to Frodsham Deanery

Bishop Mark and Bishop Julie spent two days in the Deanery of Frodsham, meeting worshippers, community groups, schoolchildren, volunteers and local leaders.

The visit began on Wednesday morning at St Berteline’s Church, Windmill Hill, where the bishops joined clergy and lay leaders for a Breakfast Chapter held in the church’s Community Café. The programme then divided to enable the bishops to experience different aspects of ministry across the deanery. Bishop Mark joined a pilgrimage walk centred on All Saints, Runcorn. Rather than following the longer Good Friday route, the group undertook a shorter circular pilgrimage around the town, taking in several of Runcorn’s striking murals and reflecting on the stories, history and communities they represent. Meanwhile, Bishop Julie visited Holy Trinity Church, where Oasis, a rehabilitation centre based next door, was working with volunteers in the church grounds.

The bishops reconvened at All Saints, Runcorn, where they shared lunch and enjoyed worship activities led by pupils from All Saints School. Later in the afternoon, Bishop Mark and Bishop Julie met ecumenical colleagues at The Castle in Runcorn.

The evening continued at Elton Church Hall, where the bishops met volunteers and beneficiaries of Elton Larder, a zero-waste charity operating from the hall. Hearing about the organisation’s work, they gained insight into the practical difference being made through food redistribution and community support.

The day concluded with an evening of worship and questions and answers at Elton Church Hall. Members of congregations from across the deanery gathered to share in worship, hear reflections on Scripture and engage in open conversation with the bishops about faith, ministry and the future of the Church.

On Thursday morning, the visit resumed at St John’s Church, Norley, where a Said Communion service was held with members of the local school Ethos group.

The bishops then travelled to Frodsham Parish Hall to visit Bee Friends, a warm-space initiative that had originally been established by the church before becoming an independent charity. They spent time listening to volunteers and guests, learning how the organisation provides hospitality, friendship and support for people who may otherwise feel isolated.

The exceptionally hot weather led to some changes to the programme, with scheduled visits to Elton Primary School and St Mary’s Church of England Primary School being cancelled. However, Bishop Julie was still able to visit Blessed Carlo Acutis Academy, the joint Catholic and Church of England school.

The visit was marked by hospitality, generosity and hope, leaving a clear impression of a deanery committed to serving its neighbourhoods and sharing the love of Christ in word and action.
