Installation of John Murray as Chancellor and Lay Canon

Installation of John Murray as Chancellor and Lay Canon

John Murray was formally installed as Chancellor of the Diocese of Chester during a ceremony at Chester Cathedral on Sunday 1 February.

The installation marked the beginning of his ministry in this key diocesan role. He succeeds His Honour David Turner, who has served the Diocese for the past twenty eight years, and to whom Bishop Mark extends our warm gratitude.

As Chancellor, John Murray is the senior legal figure and serves as the judge of the Consistory Court of the Diocese of Chester, which has responsibility for matters of ecclesiastical law, including church buildings, churchyards, and other legal issues affecting parishes and clergy. The role is central to the governance and good order of the diocese, combining legal expertise with an understanding of the Church’s mission and pastoral context. His appointment as Lay Canon also recognises his standing and contribution within the life of the Cathedral and the wider Church.

John Murray brings a wealth of experience to the role, not least in his extensive experience in planning law. He has served as Deputy Chancellor in Chichester and York. The Chancellor’s role requires careful judgement, independence, and sensitivity, particularly when dealing with cases that touch on heritage, worship, and the life of local communities.

His appointment was warmly welcomed by clergy and lay representatives across the diocese.

Bishop Mark said: “I am deeply grateful to David for his faithful service in this role for many years and delighted welcome John as his successor. The Chancellor of a Diocese offers stability and wisdom, which is often invisible but completely invaluable.  I very much look forward to working with John in this vital role as we serve all the people of this amazing Diocese.”

The transition also provides an opportunity to give our thanks to David Turner for his dedicated service as Chancellor. During his tenure, David guided the diocese through a period of significant change, offering wise counsel, clarity, and fairness in the exercise of his judicial responsibilities. His contribution to the life and stability of the Diocese of Chester was gratefully acknowledged, and he leaves a strong legacy on which his successor can build.

The Diocese now looks forward to working with John Murray as he begins this important ministry, supporting parishes and safeguarding the legal and spiritual integrity of the Church in Chester.
