New Worshipping Communities ... church, but not as we know it

Strategic Programme Manager, Rebecca Holland looks ahead to three events for those exploring and developing fresh ways of being church - New Worshipping Communities

We’re excited to be forming learning networks for those exploring New Worshipping Communities (NWC), as we continue our termly gatherings designed to support and inspire those investigating fresh ways of being church.

We want to support churches in imagining new ways to reach those who aren’t currently connecting with church life. In particular, we want our gatherings to create space to share stories, be inspired, and learn together, as we explore opportunities to create and grow New Worshipping Communities in our parishes and wider contexts.

A New Worshipping Community is simply something that enables us to help people encounter Jesus. That might be through a new service, or by doing something in a new way, or in a new place—or all three. It should include at least two aspects of worship—such as prayer, praise, scripture, service, or sacrament—and be moving towards including more. Most importantly, it should feel like a place where people can belong, where faith can grow and people become part of a worshipping community, not just an event.

Across the diocese, we’re already seeing examples of this springing up - started by ordinary people stepping out with faith and creativity. These aren’t one-size-fits-all models—they’re local responses to local needs, which God is using to do extraordinary things.

These Learning Communities are all about the shared journey of stepping out to start a New Worshipping Community. Each termly gathering will offer theological reflection, practical tools, real-life examples, and space to reflect and plan together.

At recent events, we’ve heard how much people value having space to connect with others exploring similar paths. One participant shared, “It’s easy to feel alone in this ministry—having a space to share and hear from others was so encouraging.” Another said, “The different ideas that spring from a collective learning environment were helpful,” and “Meeting others who are just a few steps ahead of me gave me clarity and confidence.”

You don’t need to come with a fully formed idea—just a desire to explore what God might be inviting you to do. Whether you're just beginning to imagine what's possible or already leading something new, there will be something for you. We particularly encourage churches to come in teams—clergy, lay leaders, and anyone with a heart for reaching new people in new places.

This term, there are three opportunities to join us:

11 October, 9:45–12:00 – Holy Trinity Hurdsfield (in person, with breakfast)

3 November, 19:00–21:00 – Online

8 November, 9:45–12:00 – All Saints Hoole (in person, with breakfast)
