Social Media Workshop to Help Parishes Build Confidence Online

Parish staff and volunteers from across the Diocese of Chester are being invited to take part in a new introductory workshop designed to help churches make the most of social media.
The Social Media Workshop: Basic Skills will provide a practical introduction to the fundamentals of social media. Aimed at beginners, the session will explore popular platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, explain common social media terminology, and demonstrate how to create simple posts that inform, engage and connect with parishioners and the wider community.
As communication increasingly takes place online, social media has become an important tool for the future growth and sustainability of the Church. It offers opportunities to reach younger generations, share the life of the parish beyond Sunday worship, connect with the wider community, and encourage new people to engage with and join church congregations.
No previous experience is required, making the workshop an ideal starting point for anyone who is new to social media or looking to build confidence in using digital platforms.
The session will be led by Karen Elsey, Communications Officer at St Michael and All Angels Church, Bramhall. With a professional background in graphic design, marketing and advertising, Karen has spent many years working in communications and is passionate about helping churches use social media effectively to tell their story and connect with local communities.
Karen has recently joined the Diocese of Chester on a freelance basis to support the diocesan communications team with social media activity. Combining professional expertise with a strong understanding of parish life, she will share practical advice, simple tips and plenty of encouragement for those taking their first steps into social media.
Harriet Roberts, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Chester, said: “Our parishes have incredible stories to tell, and social media provides a valuable opportunity to share those stories with both existing congregations and the wider community. Whether it's showcasing community projects, inviting people to services and events, or celebrating the everyday life of the Church, social media can help churches reach people in ways that were not possible a generation ago. This workshop is designed to give people the confidence and practical skills they need to get started.”
The workshop forms part of the Diocese's ongoing commitment to supporting parishes in developing their communications and outreach in an increasingly digital world.
