Celebrating licensed lay ministry

Celebrating licensed lay ministry

New Readers and a Church Army Evangelist have been licensed at a special service of celebration and thanksgiving at Chester Cathedral on Saturday 10th October.

The service, led by Bishop Mark, with a sermon from Bishop Sam, celebrated the calling, commitment and contribution of lay ministers across the diocese.

Four new Readers were licensed: Neil Ashworth (Gatley), Ben Fletcher (Sandiway), Sue Horn (Latchford) and Timothy Shelton (Bebington). Philip James was also licensed as a Church Army Evangelist, serving in Edgeley and Cheadle Heath.

Licensed Lay Ministers are an important part of the life and mission of the Church. Theologically trained and practically experienced, they bring a wealth of gifts to their local communities. Readers preach, teach, lead worship and share in pastoral and evangelistic ministry, working alongside clergy and encouraging others to discover and use their gifts.

Church Army Evangelists are trained and commissioned to share the good news of Jesus through words and actions, pioneering new ways of connecting with people and communities and helping others discover Christian faith.

Those newly licensed have completed Foundations for Ministry followed by further training, supported by tutors, mentors, spiritual companions and their local churches.

The service also welcomed Readers transferring their licences to new parishes, celebrated those receiving Permission to Officiate, and gave thanks for eight Readers and Pastoral Workers becoming Emeriti after years of faithful service. A full list of these people is below.

Could God be calling you to lay ministry? Lay ministry takes many forms, and the Church needs people with different gifts, experiences and backgrounds. Whether you feel drawn to preaching, leading worship, pastoral care or sharing your faith in your community, there are opportunities to explore where God might be leading you.

If you are beginning to sense a calling, why not take the first step? Speak to your vicar or contact the diocesan Ministry Team to find out more about exploring your vocation and the training and support available. Your journey into ministry could begin with a simple conversation. For more information email ministry@chester.anglican.org
