Congratulations Revd Canon Dr Michael Leyden, the new Bishop of Penrith!

Congratulations Revd Canon Dr Michael Leyden, the new Bishop of Penrith!

The Bishop of Chester, Mark Tanner has offered its warmest congratulations to the Revd Canon Dr Michael Leyden following the announcement that Michael is to become the next Suffragan Bishop of Penrith in the Diocese of Carlisle.

His Majesty The King approved Michael’s nomination, following recommendation by the Bishop of Carlisle. Michael will take up the role later in the year.

Michael is currently serving as Dean of Emmanuel Theological College, and has previously served as Vicar of the Benefice of Weston with Shavington in the Diocese of Chester, and his wife Anna is Vicar of Christ Church, Chester. Together, they are a valued part of our diocesan community, offering leadership, encouragement and pastoral care to many. As Suffragan Bishop Michael will work alongside the Bishop of Carlisle in supporting the diocese’s churches, with particular responsibility for encouraging discipleship, vocations and leadership, as well as supporting its church schools.

Bishop Mark said: “We are so grateful for Michael’s ministry, especially for his service as the founding Dean of Emmanuel Theological College, based at Church House, where he has played a key role in training and forming new generations of clergy and lay leaders across the region. His passion for discipleship, theological formation and developing leaders from a wide range of backgrounds has made a significant contribution to the life of the whole Church.

Michael goes with the prayers, gratitude and good will of the Diocese of Chester. His gifts, experience and faith will undoubtedly be a tremendous blessing to all he serves, and he will be great asset to the life of the Church in Cumbria. He and the family are very much in my prayers in this time of transition, although I am delighted that Anna will continue to serve here in the Diocese.

Michael will be consecrated in York Minster in a service in April.
