Helping Christians Prepare for Uni

Helping Christians Prepare for Uni

Christian students across Cheshire are being given practical guidance and encouragement as they prepare to make the transition from sixth form to university.

“Uni Ready” is a one-off session held each September by Daniel Hill, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Liverpool, and Gail Aldridge, who is based at Christ Church Greenbank. The session is aimed at Christian students completing Year 13 and preparing to begin university.

The event seeks to highlight both the opportunities university life can offer and some of the challenges students may encounter as they leave home and begin life in a new environment.

Hill, who attends St John’s Church in Hertford, Cheshire, said the idea for the session came from seeing the transition from both a church and university perspective.

“As a member of St John’s Church in Hertford, I see their Year 13 students Sunday by Sunday as they’re preparing to go off to university,” he said. “But I’m also, in my day job, a senior lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Liverpool.”

As the university’s lead for admissions, Hill sees new students arriving each year from across the UK and around the world. He wanted to use that experience to help Christian students prepare for what can be a significant change in their lives.

Uni Ready offers encouragement and practical preparation, while also helping churches and families to support students while they are away.

Ultimately, Uni Ready aims to equip students to make the most of those opportunities while being prepared for the challenges they may face.

The aim is for Year 13 students to arrive at university confident, informed and ready to get involved, both in university life and in living out their Christian faith in a new setting.
