Sensible reading group

Sensible reading group

St Christopher’s, Pott Shrigley have been running book groups several times a week to study Sharon Garlough Brown’s four book novel series.

The first book in the series is called 'Sensible Shoes'. The story is about four women who embark on a spiritual journey together at a retreat centre: Hannah is a pastor who is exhausted. Meg is a widow and a recent empty-nester. Mara is woman who has experienced repeated rejection and Charissa is a hard-working student. The women find themselves drawn into a collective journey of new spiritual practices, mutual support, personal growth and a deeper life with God.

The series explores the challenges of life, with realistic and flawed characters.

Vicar, Lynn Caudwell, says, “Our book groups are suitable for any who are interested in finding out more about God, deepening their spiritual lives and making new friends."

Twenty four ladies attended the launch of the first book group, from several churches and some from none. There are now four groups with another about to start.

Lynn and the other group leaders encourage the group members to first share their thoughts in pairs, with an understanding that all discussions are confidential. There is no expectation that people will share their own histories in the bigger group however many have found the groups to be a safe and supportive space to do so.

Lynn says, “These book groups encourage a different type of journey than the usual church life. They help to unpack the unhelpful need to be perfect whilst encouraging an individual’s honesty with God. ”
