Bishop of Chester features in Cheshire Life Christmas Edition

Bishop of Chester features in Cheshire Life Christmas Edition

The Bishop of Chester, Mark Tanner is featured in this month’s festive edition of Cheshire Life magazine, offering readers a glimpse into his family's Christmas traditions as he reflects on the season.

In the article, Bishop Mark shares the joy and meaning of Christmas, alongside some light-hearted family customs that make the season special in Bishop’s House, Chester. “Christmas is a time when we balance close family life with sharing in worship and welcoming the wider church family,” he explains. “For us, that means a special meal and exchanging presents on Christmas Eve, before the busyness of Christmas Day.”

The article highlights the historic setting of Bishop’s House, which sits alongside Chester Cathedral and includes a chapel dating back nearly a thousand years. “It’s pretty mind-blowing to know people have lived on this site for almost 2,000 years and worshipped here for at least 1,000,” Bishop Mark says, reflecting on the deep roots of Christian faith in the region.

Readers also learn about the family’s traditions, from music and games to the much-loved Christmas pudding ritual. “We always set fire to the pudding,” Bishop Mark laughs, “and almost never get round to the cake until Boxing Day!” He adds with a smile: “It’s one of two days of the year when chocolate can be eaten before breakfast.”

Bishop Mark's message in the magazine is a reminder of the heart of Christmas: “It’s a season of hope and joy, but also of belonging and being loved. That’s why it has such a lasting appeal.”
