A new book by Bishop Mark to help introduce people to Jesus

A new pocket-sized book by the Bishop of Chester, Mark Tanner has been produced to help Christians share their faith in non-cringy, approachable language.

SOMETIMES: A Little Guide for the Wonderers, the Wanderers, and the Searching is a fresh, creative resource designed to help people explore the person of Jesus through seven powerful statements he made about himself.

Early copies have been described as “making Jesus accessible in a simple, but deeply profound way”, “like a children’s book for adults…”.

Bishop Mark explains: “In a world where many feel something is missing—where people are spiritually hungry or simply lost—this book offers a gentle, joyful invitation to discover more. Week by week, we see people are wandering into church and Christians are being asked about their faith by those who are wondering if there’s more to life …”

SOMETIMES is based directly on Jesus’ own words from the Bible and is designed for anyone curious about faith, whether they’re stepping into a church for the first time or asking questions in everyday places like schools, workplaces, or cafés. With vibrant illustrations by artist Tom Wilcox, design by Rachel Hsuan, and local printing by Johnsons Printers in Nantwich, the book is as visually engaging as it is spiritually enriching.

Mark explains: “It is the first book I have written with pictures and the smallest by far. Someone heard me say that I could not have written this 10 years ago and asked why: it is a combination of seeing how important simplicity is, and the deep call to trust that this really is Jesus’ work. All this book does is introduce you to Jesus and ask if you want to meet him. It is the start of a journey not the end.”

“If you’re curious about Jesus or want to help others meet him, this book is for you. It’s simple, colourful, and inviting … and there is something here for everyone who is looking for more.”

In Chester Diocese, where the vision is to introduce 1.5 million people to Jesus, this book was generating excitement even before it was launched. One school pre-ordered 60 copies, another parish asked for 200, and a prison is lined up for 100 copies for the chaplaincy. Thanks to a generous donor, free and reduced-price copies are being made available to schools, prisons, and communities.

Already in the pipeline, is a simple 7 week course. This will feature short videos, discussion questions, and prayers—perfect for lunch breaks, school runs, or community gatherings. A slide pack for primary schools is also underway, making it easy to lead engaging collective worship sessions.

Books are available for just £1 each, with discounts for bulk orders. A large print version is also available. Both are available to order online here.
